Andy & Carolyn bought a barn and converted it into a beautiful, stunning family home.

Bettinsons were asked to get involved to design and install the kitchen.

Andy & Carolyn visited the factory showroom and chose a style from the Kitchen Maker range.

They were looking for a very individual, open-plan, bespoke kitchen design. The brief was to have no wall units and a very large island with a social sitting area to the living side.

There were a lot of planning issues in the design of the kitchen relating to extraction and structural aspects of the kitchen which we worked with the clients to overcome.

Designing the kitchen took about a week and installation took about two and a half weeks.

“We had to give the kitchen a lot of thought. It was very different from any other kitchen we’ve had because it was so open plan.

We had to think about what we would use every day and how things would be organised. We knew that we wanted an overflow kitchen (door off the kitchen) which has a coffee machine and other storage.

The storage in the open plan kitchen needed to be just right. There couldn’t be a lot of clutter on display and we had to think about where everything was going to be.”

Ergonomics came into it in the sense of the ‘kitchen triangle’ and the placement of where everything would go.

Although it may have been a total of a week to design, we went through lots of iterations, especially around the balance of aesthetics and function.

Aesthetics was everything in terms of it being uniform but we also wanted to have the functionality. Everything on the kitchen side of the island has 2 drawers but it is actually for aesthetics. There is a lot going on behind those drawers!
